How to shuffle exam questions in 4 steps

  1. Upload your exam

A Word or PDF exam, quiz or questionnaire with numbered questions.

  2. Review the questions

Fix anything flagged and confirm the correct answers.

  3. Choose your test versions

    2 to 26 randomized sets, labelled A–Z or 1, 2, 3.

  4. Download sets and keys

Word or PDF, one at a time or all as a ZIP.

Every randomized exam set gets its own answer key

Each answer follows the option, not the letter, so Set B’s answer key is built from Set B’s own order. “All of the above” and “None of the above” stay in place, and a question with an option like “Both A and B” keeps its options in order.

  • Shuffles multiple choice (2–8 options), true or false, fill in the blank and short answer questions
  • Questions are shuffled within their own section of the test
  • Up to 200 questions per exam or quiz

An exam and quiz shuffler for teachers, lecturers and trainers

For anyone who gives the same test to a room of people sitting within sight of one another: school exams, university midterms, certification tests and workplace training quizzes. A quiz shuffle works exactly like an exam shuffle here, with the same upload, the same review and the same answer keys. If you’ve already written the paper, this is the step after it.

Exam shuffle FAQ

Which question types can be shuffled?
Multiple choice with two to eight options, true or false, fill in the blank, and short answer. Matching questions aren’t supported yet: rewrite one as separate multiple-choice items, or add it by hand after downloading.
Will my exam’s formatting carry over?
No. Only the text is read, so each set is laid out fresh as a clean, numbered paper. You add the header (title, school, date, time limit, instructions, name and ID line) on the review screen. Images and diagrams need to be added back.
Why won’t it read my scanned PDF?
A scan is a picture of a page, with no text inside it to reorder. Upload the Word file it was printed from instead. A PDF exported from Word or Google Docs keeps its text and reads fine.
Can I shuffle an exam written in Google Docs?
Yes. Choose File › Download › Microsoft Word (.docx) and upload that file. LibreOffice and Pages work the same way: anything that saves as .docx or PDF.
Do I need to mark the correct answers first?
It helps but isn’t required. Bold answers, or an answer key at the end such as “1. C, 2. A”, are picked up for you. Anything unmarked is set on the review screen.
How much does it cost?
Nothing, and there’s no account or trial. Each exam can have up to 200 questions and be shuffled into as many as 26 versions.
Will one version end up with mostly C answers?
No. Each version spreads its correct answers evenly across the answer letters, and avoids putting the same letter three times in a row. Options you pinned, such as “All of the above”, stay where you put them.
How do I grade several versions at once?
Download every version with answer keys and you also get a master key: one table listing each question from your original, where it landed in every version, and its answer there. Every page footer names its version and page number, so loose pages find their key.
